What does this measure?
Children instructed at home are defined as children of compulsory school age being educated at home by parents or a parent-employed tutor. Counts do NOT include children receiving home- or hospital-bound instruction by a public school district or BOCES.
Summary Statement
While the number of students who were home schooled was on an upward trend by 2020, COVID-19 accelerated the trend in most school districts in Orange County. While numbers have decreased since the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, home schooling overall has increased by 165% between 2009 and 2025 in Orange County.
