Environmental Cleanup Sites

What does this measure?

This indicator measures the status of hazardous waste cleanup sites across various municipalities in Orange County. These are either Brownfield sites or Superfund sites, both of which are federal designations. Superfund sites are considered the most contaminated hazardous waste sites in the nation and are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency EPA but can be managed by NYS. Brownfield sites are considered lightly to moderately contaminated properties that can be redeveloped. They are typically managed by the NYS DEC with support from the EPA.

Summary Statement

The data reveals that there are numerous hazardous waste sites in Orange County. Most Brownfield sites are under active remediation or have received Certificates of Completion supporting redevelopment, while Superfund and State Superfund sites involve long-term soil and groundwater monitoring or construction-phase cleanups managed by the EPA or NYSDEC.
