Greenhouse Gas Emissions by Municipality
What does this measure?
This indicator measures greenhouse gas emissions by municipality in Orange County, expressed in metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO₂e). Emissions are reported across nine categories: residential, commercial, industrial, mobile energy, solid waste, wastewater treatment, industrial processes, agriculture, and energy supply. Data is shown for 2010 and 2021, allowing comparisons of sectoral and municipal contributions to total countywide emissions.
Summary Statement
Between 2010 and 2021, total greenhouse gas emissions in Orange County decreased from 4,382,341 MTCO₂e to 3,982,071 MTCO₂e, a reduction of about 9%. Mobile energy remained the largest contributor, accounting for nearly half of emissions in both years, while residential and commercial sectors together made up roughly one-quarter. Wallkill, Newburgh, and Middletown were consistently among the largest municipal emitters, though emissions became more widely distributed across the county by 2021.
