What does this measure?

This indicator provides information on the average number of people employed in Orange County, categorized by industry sector. The data comes from quarterly reports submitted by employers covered under New York State’s Unemployment Insurance Law. Employment sectors are classified using the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Note that the total employment percentages are based on Total Private Employment.

Summary Statement

Since the 2015 Report Card, Health Care and Social Assistance has surpassed Retail Trade as the top employment sector in Orange County, with 25,649 people working in those fields, representing 18.5% of total employment. Retail trade follows with 16%, followed by Accommodation and Food Service at 8.9%, Transportation and Warehousing at 8.6% and Manufacturing at 7.3%. Between 2022 and 2024, Transportation and Warehousing saw the largest increase at 28.7%, followed by Management of Companies and Enterprises, and Agriculture and Forestry.
