What does this measure?

This indicator provides the number of dairy farms (reported in 2022) and the number of dairy cows (reported in 2023) in counties across the Hudson Valley and New York State. The data is sourced from agricultural reporting systems and reflects the presence of active dairy operations in each area.

Summary Statement

In 2022, Orange County had the highest number of dairy farms in the Hudson Valley with 28 operations, followed by Dutchess County with 14, and Sullivan County with 13. In terms of herd size, Orange County also led with 3,400 dairy cows reported in 2023, more than double the number in Dutchess (1,700 cows) and triple that of Sullivan (1,100 cows). Ulster County reported 400 cows, though the number of farms was not disclosed. Data for Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester counties were either suppressed or unavailable.
