Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Transportation Sources

What does this measure?

This indicator measures 2019 on-road greenhouse gas emissions and energy use from transportation sources for several counties. The emissions are quantified in metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2e) and are broken down by carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. The energy use is measured in millions of British thermal units (MMBtu) and is broken down by gasoline, diesel, and ethanol.

Summary Statement

The data reveals that Orange County had total on-road greenhouse gas emissions of 2,048,570 MTCO2e in 2019, with the majority of that coming from carbon dioxide emissions. In terms of energy use, transportation in Orange County consumed a total of 30,385,043 MMBtu, with gasoline accounting for the largest share at 24,618,745 MMBtu. By comparison, Westchester County, a larger neighboring county, had significantly higher total emissions and energy use, at 3,551,861 MTCO2e and 52,598,076 MMBtu, respectively.
