Summary Statement

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Orange County consistently recorded fewer than 2,900 deaths annually. However, 2020 marked a significant shift, with the number of deaths surging to 3,512. While there was a slight decrease in 2021 to 3,163, the figure rose again in 2022 to 3,222.

Comparing 2019 to 2020, Orange County experienced a 27% increase in resident deaths. This upward trend was not isolated, as neighboring counties also saw substantial increases during the same period. Rockland County, for instance, witnessed an even more pronounced 41% increase, while Westchester County's deaths rose by 33%. Among the surrounding areas, Ulster County reported the most favorable rate of increase, though it still observed a 13% rise in deaths.
