HIV Racial Disparity
What does this measure?
This indicator measures the racial and ethnic distribution of newly diagnosed HIV cases in the Mid-Hudson Region (Orange, Dutchess, Sullivan, and Ulster Counties) compared to New York State overall. It tracks both the number and percentage of new HIV diagnoses by race/ethnicity over time, highlighting disparities in who is most affected by HIV. By showing changes across reporting years, the measure illustrates whether certain groups are disproportionately impacted relative to their population size.
Summary Statement
Between 2004 and 2024, the Mid-Hudson Region consistently saw racial and ethnic disparities in new HIV diagnoses. White individuals accounted for about one-third of new cases in 2024 (33.9%), Black individuals represented 30.5%, and Hispanic individuals accounted for 32.2%. Although the overall number of new diagnoses has declined since 2004, disparities by race and ethnicity persist, mirroring statewide patterns but with some variation in proportions across groups.
