English is a Second Language
What does this measure?
The first table presents a snapshot of the number of residents aged five and older in New York State and its Hudson Valley counties who self-identified as speaking English “less than very well.” This number is then expressed as a percentage of the total population in each respective county. The second table, specifically focusing on Orange County, details the breakdown of all individuals aged five years and older by age group, categorizing them by those who speak only English and those who speak English “very well,” “well,” “not very well,” or “not at all.”
Summary Statement
In 2023, Orange County reported 15.2% of its population indicated they speak English less than very well. Among the regional counties, Rockland had the highest percentage at 21.1%, while Ulster had the lowest at 4.7%.
In Orange County, approximately 35.7% of the population in 2023 spoke a language other than or in addition to English. Consistent with previous trends, second language speakers tended to be younger: 45.7% of children ages 5–17, 36.7% of those 18–64, and 19.1% of people 65 and older.
