Vehicle Ownership
What does this measure?
This indicator tracks household vehicle ownership in Hudson Valley counties for selected years (2005, 2009, 2012, 2023, and 2024). It includes the total number of households and the percentage distribution of vehicle availability: households with no vehicle, one vehicle, two vehicles, and three or more vehicles.
Summary Statement
In Orange County, the share of households with no vehicle declined overall, starting at 9.6% in 2005, peaking at 11.3% in 2009, and then dropping to 8.6% in 2023 before rising slightly to 11.3% in 2024. Single-vehicle households increased from 28.4% in 2005 to 32% in 2023, and further to 34.5% in 2024.
In Westchester County, households without a vehicle remained relatively stable, with 13.8% in 2005 and 13.9% in 2023, followed by a slight decrease to 13.1% in 2024. Across most counties, the trend shows modest growth in single-vehicle households and slight declines in households with two or more vehicles, while remote work and urbanization may influence these patterns.
