Age of Wastewater Treatment Plants

What does this measure?

The table shows the average age for wastewater treatment facilities in the Hudson Valley Region.

Wastewater Treatment by klancellotti

Summary Statement

Many of the facilities are older, with the average age exceeding 50 years in all counties except Putnam. Across the Mid-Hudson Region, the average facility age is approximately 58 years, which is consistent with Orange County’s average of 58 years. A wastewater treatment plant over 50 years old is likely to rely on outdated infrastructure and technology, resulting in higher maintenance costs, reduced operational efficiency, and an increased risk of mechanical failure or environmental noncompliance. Aging systems also face challenges in meeting modern water quality standards and in accommodating current population levels and industrial demands.
