Adult (18+) Arrests by County, Race/Ethnicity & Age

What does this measure?

This dataset tracks the number of adult arrests (individuals aged 18 and older) in New York State and selected Hudson Valley counties—Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester—for the years 2015, 2020, and 2024. It provides insight into public safety trends by showing changes in total arrests over time and includes detailed breakdowns by race/ethnicity (Asian, Black, Hispanic, Other/Unknown, White), age group, and gender (Female, Male, Not Reported).

Summary Statement

Orange County’s total arrests declined from 8,602 in 2015 to 5,774 in 2020, then rose to 6,868 in 2024. By 2024, Hispanic arrests (2,235) nearly matched White arrests (2,540), making Hispanics one of the most frequent demographics. Several counties experienced a notable dip in 2020, likely influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. For example:

  • Rockland County dropped from 3,737 arrests in 2015 to 2,226 in 2020, then rebounded to 3,651 in 2024.

  • Ulster County fell from 4,220 in 2015 to 2,889 in 2020, before increasing to 3,228 in 2024.

Statewide, arrests decreased sharply in 2020 (from 458,569 in 2015 to 258,290) but rose again to 387,320 in 2024, reflecting a broader trend of pandemic-related decline followed by recovery.
