What does this measure?
This table shows the number of hate crime arrests that were prosecuted in Mid-Hudson counties—Orange, Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester—as well as statewide totals for New York from 2018 through 2022. An asterisk (*) indicates years in which no incidents were reported for that county. According to the Oxford Dictionary, a hate crime is a crime, often involving violence, motivated by prejudice based on ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or similar grounds.
Summary Statement
Statewide, hate crime prosecutions increased from 228 in 2018 to 422 in 2022, despite a dip to 187 in 2020.
Orange County fluctuated, with 6 prosecutions in 2018 and 2020, dropping to 1 in 2021, then rising to 5 in 2022.
Westchester County had the most significant regional increase, jumping from 6 in 2021 to 21 in 2022.
Rockland County also saw a sharp rise, from 1 in 2021 to 12 in 2022.
Dutchess County varied, peaking at 5 prosecutions in 2021.
Putnam and Sullivan Counties reported no prosecutions in multiple years, with Sullivan showing zero in 2022.
Ulster County ended the period with 6 prosecutions in 2022, up from zero in 2020.
