County-wide Emergencies
What does this measure?
This table lists county-wide emergency and disaster declarations in Orange County, NY, as recognized by FEMA. It includes the date of each event, whether it was classified as an “Emergency” or a “Disaster,” the type of emergency or disaster (e.g., storms, hurricanes, flooding, blizzards, pandemics), and the type of federal assistance provided (Individual Assistance [IA], Public Assistance [PA], or both). The table spans from 1965 to 2024 and includes both natural and biological events.
Summary Statement
Between 1965 and 2024, Orange County experienced over 30 federally recognized emergencies or disasters, most commonly severe storms and flooding. Hurricane-related disasters were frequent, especially in the 2000s and 2010s, including multiple declarations for Hurricanes Irene, Sandy, and Ida. The most recent declarations in 2023 and 2024 involved remnants of Hurricane Ida and a fire along Jennings Creek. The COVID-19 pandemic was the only biological emergency listed. Both IA and PA assistance were often granted, though some events only received PA.
