Percent of Workers 16 Years and Over Who Worked Outside of County of Residence

What does this measure?

This indicator examines the percentage of workers aged 16 and older who were employed outside the Hudson Valley counties in which they resided in selected years: 2005 through 2025. It includes individuals who lived in a county within the Hudson Valley region but commuted elsewhere for work.

Summary Statement

As of 2023, Orange County had one of the lowest levels of residents working outside their home county, continuing a steady decline since 2005. After holding at the same level through 2012, the number gradually decreased further, reaching its lowest point in 2021 before increasing slightly in the two years that followed. Across the Hudson Valley, most counties experienced similar reductions in outbound commuting over time. Rockland County, which had one of the highest levels in 2005, dropped consistently over the years to reach the lowest in the region by 2023. Sullivan County also declined through 2012, but unlike others, increased again in recent years, showing the highest levels of outbound commuting in 2023. These shifts reflect a regional trend toward more residents working within their own counties, influenced in part by changing local job markets and the rise of remote work following the COVID-19 pandemic.
