Violent Crimes
What does this measure?
This table tracks the total number of violent crimes reported to police in Hudson Valley counties and New York State from 2007 through 2024. “Violent crime” includes murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. The total is broken down annually by type of offense. The final columns show the percent change in total violent crimes from 2007 to 2024, from 2007 to 2015, and from 2015 to 2024.
Summary Statement
Violent crime decreased significantly across most Hudson Valley counties. Orange County saw an 11.9% decline in total violent crimes between 2007 and 2015, declining from 1042 in 2007 to 918 in 2015. This trend then continued, dropping to the lowest level in 2024 of 658, a 36.9% drop since 2007. Ulster County saw the largest reduction, falling 52.7% over the 2007-2024 time frame, from 455 to 215. In New York State, violent crimes increased slightly from 2007-2024, from 79,818 to 80,148, a 0.4% increase, after seeing a 5.8% reduction between 2007 and 2015.
