Homicide Rates

What does this measure?

This indicator measures the homicide rate in Hudson Valley counties, expressed as the number of homicides per 100,000 residents. The data spans multiple years, from 2000-2024, and includes reports for Orange, Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester counties, as well as the New York State. By comparing these figures over time and across counties, this measure helps evaluate trends in homicides and allows for the identification of counties with higher or lower levels of lethal violence during different time periods.

Summary Statement

According to the data, homicide rates have fluctuated over time across the Hudson Valley. Orange County had the highest homicide rate in 2008, at 2.6 per 100,000. Sullivan County reached 6.4 in 2021, and Dutchess County was 3.0 in the same year. New York State as a whole began to see a steady decrease from 2000, declining from 5.2 to 3.1 in 2015. However, rates then increased, rising to 4.4 in 2020 and reaching the highest reported figure of 4.5 in 2021. Since then, rates have begun to decline again, dropping to 3.2 in 2023.
