What does this measure?
This table reports the number of index crimes (murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft) per 1,000 people in Hudson Valley counties from 2007 to 2024. It includes Orange, Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester counties, as well as the New York State total.

In the most recent year reported, 2024, Orange County recorded 11 index crimes per 1,000 people, a decrease from 19 in 2015 and 23 in 2007. Similar trends are evident in other counties within the Hudson Valley region. Dutchess County reported 11 index crimes per 1,000 in 2024, lower than the 15 in 2015 and 22 in 2007. Putnam County saw 5 index crimes per 1,000 people in 2024, making it the lowest among all counties in the region that year. Overall, while some counties have experienced fluctuations in crime rates, there is a downward trend compared to a decade ago, ranging from a 55% decline for Ulster County to no change for Rockland County.
